DES MOINES, IOWA — Wednesday, March 1, 2023 — The City’s Forestry Division launched its first ever Treesure Hunt contest today in the downtown Des Moines skywalk system.Participants will traverse the Skywalk in search of six Treesures — tree-related art pieces installed by the Forestry team. Each Treesure site can be photographed and submitted as an entry into a raffle for a 5-to-7-foot tree to be planted on the winner’s property.City officials feel that the contest offers residents a new way of experiencing the Skywalk while raising awareness of the Forestry Division’s programs.

“The Treesure Hunt is an excellent way for residents to be active and enjoy the Skywalk,” said City Forester Shane McQuillan. “Workers on their lunch break or even families exploring downtown will be able to add a bit of fun to their day.”

The Treesure Hunt runs from March 1 to April 30. Finding all six Treesures is not required, but each entry can increase the chances of winning. On May 15, the City will announce the winner of the Treesure Hunt contest. They will then select a tree from Forestry’s recommended species list to be planted by City employees on their property.

“While our Tiny Trees program gives away five tree seedlings to residents to plant themselves, this is a larger,  well-established tree that we’re planting for them,” said Urban Forestry Project Manager Dan Just. “It’s a great supplement to our partnership with residents to grow our urban forest.”

The Treesure Hunt is open to legal residents of the United States and the District of Columbia who are eighteen (18) years of age or older, but the prize tree must be planted with City Forester approval within the City Limits of Des Moines. The contest flyer containing a map of the Treesure locations along with the entry form and official contest rules are available at DSM.City/TreesureHunt.
