Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) attended a transfer of remains ceremony at Dover Air Force Base for two Iowa National Guard members who died in Syria. The fallen soldiers were Sgt. William Nathaniel “Nate” Howard from Marshalltown and Sgt. Edgar Torres-Tovar from Des Moines. The event also saw the presence of President Donald Trump, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Chief of Staff of the Army General Randy George, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, and members of the Iowa congressional delegation.
Grassley, together with Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), introduced a Senate resolution to honor the service and lives of Howard and Torres-Tovar. Representative Zach Nunn (R-Iowa) is leading a similar resolution in the House of Representatives.
“Sergeant Howard and Sergeant Torres-Tovar paid the ultimate sacrifice, and we owe them a debt that can never be repaid,” Grassley said. “Yesterday’s transfer of remains allowed us to continue paying our respects to these young men. Barbara and I are praying for their families and loved ones. I’m also joining Senator Ernst to introduce a resolution in their honor. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten, and will be written in the Senate’s history books forever.”
