U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley announced on May 4 the release of the Senate Judiciary Committee title for the Republicans’ targeted reconciliation bill, which aims to provide funding for federal law enforcement and border security measures through Fiscal Year 2029. The legislation will allocate funds to the U.S. Departments of Justice and Homeland Security.

The announcement comes after a period during which Democrats shut down the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for 76 days, impacting law enforcement officers and their families. Grassley said this action highlighted divisions over border security and police funding policies.

“Democrats set the wrong kind of record by shutting down DHS for a historic 76 days, forcing brave law enforcement officers and their families to miss multiple paychecks. Sadly, Democrats’ irresponsible DHS shutdown proved they’re still the party of open borders and ‘defund the police.’

“Republicans won’t allow our country to be dragged backwards by Democrats’ radical, anti-law enforcement agenda. The Senate Judiciary Committee is taking action to help provide certainty for federal law enforcement and safer streets for American families. We will work to ensure this critical funding gets signed into law without unnecessary delay,” Grassley said.

Grassley has been married since 1954 and has five children, according to the official website. He earned degrees in political science from the University of Northern Iowa according to his official biography. In addition to his legislative work, he assists Iowans with matters involving federal agencies and whistleblowers as reported by his office’s website.

Grassley’s background includes experience as a sheet metal shearer and assembly line worker before serving in public office; he held a position in the Iowa state legislature from 1958 until 1974 according to information provided on his official website. He is also one of only two farmers currently serving in the U.S. Senate, actively raising corn and soybeans in Butler County, Iowa.
