Representative Zach Nunn announced on Apr. 24 a $1 million federal investment to expand the Youth & Shelter Services Ember Recovery Campus in Cambridge, Iowa. The funding will support the next phase of the campus’s growth, aiming to enhance recovery and workforce training services for young Iowans dealing with homelessness, substance abuse, and mental health challenges.
The initiative is intended to address ongoing issues faced by youth in central Iowa by increasing access to comprehensive care and long-term support. The expansion will provide additional supportive housing capacity, dedicated workforce training space, a wellness hub, expanded housing options, and recreational facilities focused on recovery.
“Every young Iowan deserves the chance to get back on their feet and build a future right here at home,” said Nunn. “This new investment strengthens Ember Recovery Campus’s ability to deliver comprehensive recovery services all under one roof, creating real pathways to stability, opportunity, and long-term success.”
Nunn secured this funding through the Fiscal Year 2026 Community Project Funding process as part of Economic Development Initiatives. Phase 2 of the project is designed specifically for adolescents and transition-age youth facing complex challenges such as addiction or homelessness. Andrew Allen, President & CEO of YSS said: “Ember Recovery Campus was our answer to the substance use crisis facing young people in Iowa… expanding into workforce development and community-based recovery… help make central Iowa one of the best places in the country for young people to recover.” Anna Gonzalez from Ember added: “This expansion helps us say yes to even more healing, support, and possibility for the youth we serve.”
State Representative Brian Lohse thanked Nunn for his dedication: “Even from Washington D.C., Congressman Nunn has maintained his steadfast dedication… Thank you…for your continued support of Iowa’s next generation!” Polk County Supervisor Mark Holm also highlighted local collaboration: “Today’s announcement is a meaningful investment in young people and families across our region.” Laura Jolly from Iowa State University called it an “exciting and meaningful step forward”.
