Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) announced that the committee will prioritize oversight of Arctic Frost in 2026. The hearings will focus on the constitutional and legal issues surrounding the election case against President Donald Trump, which began at the Biden Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and was expanded by Jack Smith to include hundreds of Republicans, including members of Congress.
Grassley is leading this investigation with support from Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations Chairman Ron Johnson (R-Wis.). Over the past year, they have released thousands of pages of records related to Arctic Frost’s political origins.
“Thanks to whistleblowers who sounded the alarm to me about Arctic Frost’s existence, this shocking political scandal is seeing the light of day,” Grassley said. “Arctic Frost was a runaway train that swept up information from hundreds of innocent people simply because of their political affiliation. Congress and the American people want answers, and sunshine is the best disinfectant. The Senate Judiciary Committee is leading this investigation to find out exactly what went wrong, so that bad actors can be held accountable and this sort of political witch hunt never happens again. Transparency brings accountability.”
The subcommittees plan to examine several aspects related to Arctic Frost. These include how telecommunication agencies responded to subpoena requests for congressional phone records, separation of powers and civil rights concerns arising from these subpoenas, judges’ roles in approving nondisclosure orders, and how government resources were allocated by the Biden Justice Department for this case.
Hearings are expected across four subcommittees: Privacy, Technology and the Law chaired by Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Constitution chaired by Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), Federal Courts, Oversight, Agency Action and Federal Rights chaired by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), and Crime and Counterterrorism chaired by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.).
Recent developments in Grassley’s oversight efforts have included pressing for full disclosure regarding Jack Smith’s subpoenas, revealing details about records obtained for over 400 Republican targets as part of Arctic Frost, demanding telecommunications companies provide all relevant records given to Jack Smith, exposing instances where senior officials personally approved opening Arctic Frost, uncovering surveillance activities on Republican senators by the FBI during its investigation into Arctic Frost, releasing additional records showing broad investigative measures targeting figures like Trump and Pence, highlighting alleged FBI supervisor misconduct connected with these investigations, making public whistleblower documents alleging a plot within DOJ and FBI concerning Trump-related cases led by Jack Smith.
Further updates are available through statements issued throughout 2025 documenting each step taken in this ongoing oversight process.
