Lovejoy Elementary is helping to feed students and families over spring break.
According to an article on WhoTV, the Des Moines elementary school put together sacks of food from its food pantry.
“We love our families,” Theron Hobbs, community school coordinator at Lovejoy Elementary, said in the article. “We wouldn't do our jobs if we didn’t care for our families and care for these communities. We’re going to do what we can because we are better together than apart.”
Hobbs doesn’t want families to feel shame with regards to using the food service.
“We want to support, affirm your dignity, we want to make sure that some burden is alleviated, at least a little bit,” he said.
Hobbs, along with other school community coordinators, are in talks with metro food pantries to implement pop-up pantries or at-home delivery options.
The Lovejoy Food Pantry provides families with a weekly supply of food throughout the school year.
