Des Moines Public Schools has shut its doors but is not turning its back on hungry students.
The district has begun serving at least 5,000 free grab-and-go meals from its 10 middle school campuses. Other districts serving lunches to students include West Des Moines, Waukee, Urbandale and Ankeny.
Each district’s story has a common thread. They were forced to close because of the coronavirus pandemic and there was a void that needed to be filled. KCCI reported 75% of the students from Des Moines Public Schools are on free or reduced lunches. It also reported the district is ready to adjust to demand in an effort to feed every student.
The meals, which consists of a lunch and breakfast, began on March 26 and are served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. West Des Moines is also serving meals 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and requires students pick up their own meals.
