City of West Des Moines issued the following announcement on Apr. 2.
Rehabilitation of the Scott Avenue Bridge over the Des Moines River is underway. The bridge closed April 1 and is anticipated to reopen to vehicular traffic by the end of the year. In early 2021, the contractor will continue to work along the edges of the bridge, and the rehabilitation is estimated to be fully complete by summer of 2021.
The Scott Avenue Bridge is included in the City’s $22 million Bridges to Opportunity project focused on rehabilitating four bridges that cross the rivers of downtown Des Moines. The City was successful in securing $8 million in Federal TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) Discretionary Grant Program funds and another $2.5 million in Federal Surface Transportation Block Grant funds to support this ambitious project.
The Scott Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation will include:
- Concrete deck overlay
- Structural concrete repair and replacement
- Concrete barrier rail repairs
- New ornamental metal rail and steel pipe handrail
- Replacement of bridge joints with new steel extrusion joints and neoprene glands
- Replacement of bridge approach pavement and sidewalks
- Installation of galvanic corrosion anodes to protect steel in bridge from corrosion
- Longitudinal grooving
The adjacent SW 1st Street Multi-Use Trail Bridge over the Raccoon River, which has been closed for rehabilitation since April 2019, will partially open to the public for pedestrian use while the Scott Avenue Bridge renovation is underway. The contractor will continue to work on the SW 1st Street Multi-Use Trail Bridge while keeping a roughly 20-foot-wide pedestrian pathway across the bridge until its repairs are complete. The SW 1st Street Multi-Use Trail Bridge repairs are anticipated to be finished this summer.
