'We had 11 extra-base hits': Iowa offense performs well in 29-14 win

Iowa baseball wins over Iowa Western. 

The final score was 29-14, marking a victory for Iowa, according to Hawkeye Sports.

“We had 11 extra-base hits in the 16-inning fall ball marathon win today over Iowa Western.  #Hawkeyes," Iowa Baseball said in a post to its official Twitter account Oct. 3 after the game. 

The Iowa Hawkeyes scored 20 unanswered runs in innings six through 11. Iowa hosted the game at Duane Banks Field, according to Hawkeye Sports. Admission to the baseball game was free. 

Iowa at one point trailed 11-2 in the game, marking a significant comeback later. Seventeen Iowa players combined for 22 hits in total during the game, with redshirt sophomore Brayden Frazier, redshirt sophomore Peyton Williams, senior Brett McCleary and redshirt sophomore Sam Hojnar all having multi hit games. McCleary, redshirt freshman Alec Nigut and freshman Sam Petersen all hit home runs during the game. 

Nigut, Anthony Mangano and Andy Nelson all had multiple RBI games, with three of Nigut's RBIs coming off his three run homer, Hawkeye Sports reported. The game also featured 11 pitchers who combined to give up 23 hits and five walks, while striking out 22 batters. Adam Mazur, Luke Llewellyn, Benjamin DeTaeye and Ty Langenberg all pitched for multiple innings while Dylan Nedved, Jared Simpson and Will Christopherson had 1-2-3 innings. 

The Hawkeyes again showed offensive prowess Oct. 8 when they shut out Kirkwood Community College 30-0.
