The City of Des Moines is offering residents the opportunity to participate in an online survey to shape the future of its citywide Historic Preservation Plan.
The City’s current Historic Preservation Plan was written in 1995 and laid the groundwork for a preservation program that recognizes the importance of utilizing historic resources, partnerships and tools in the protection of historic areas of Des Moines.
The Historic Preservation Survey is available in both English and Spanish on the City’s website. The survey is comprised of questions that aim to gauge residents’ familiarity with the City’s current preservation methods and help identify the historical resources that residents deem crucial to the story of Des Moines. This survey is one of the first opportunities for the community to provide input on the existing historic preservation program. Additional opportunities for community participation will be announced later this fall.
The updated plan will address these topics and expand the scope to consider the importance of intangible historic resources – such as events, stories, and places that have been lost over time or run the risk of getting lost in the absence of intentional programming – and incorporate an equity audit of the existing historic preservation program.
The project is in its early stages and is slated for completion in summer 2023.
