Bill Gustoff State Representative, District 40 | Iowa House Republicans
On Tuesday, March 19th, the Iowa House Republicans successfully passed Senate File 2340, a bill aimed at addressing illegal immigration within the state. The legislation prohibits individuals previously caught entering the country illegally from remaining in Iowa and establishes a removal procedure for those found to be in violation of federal law.
Leading the charge for the bill was Representative Steve Holt (R-Denison), who emphasized the distinction between legal and illegal immigration. Holt stated, "There is a difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration." He further highlighted the need for state action in light of the federal government's perceived failure to address the issue: "The federal government has abdicated its responsibilities and states can and must act." Holt also pointed out the presence of criminal elements among illegal immigrants, stating, "But there are also gang members, drug dealers, and terrorists who are here endangering our citizens."
The bill, which received bipartisan support, prohibits law enforcement officers from making arrests in certain sensitive locations. Individuals cannot be arrested in places such as schools, places of worship, health care facilities, or facilities for survivors of sexual assault.
In explaining the necessity for the bill, Holt emphasized the importance of states taking action to protect their sovereignty and citizens. He noted, "Many other states are standing up to protect their sovereignty and their citizens and Iowa must do the same."
The Iowa House passed the bill with a bipartisan vote of 64-30, signaling a united front in addressing illegal immigration within the state.
