Congressman Zach Nunn, who represents Iowa's 3rd congressional district, has used his social media platform to address the ongoing government shutdown and its effects on both federal workers and Iowa’s economy.
On October 11, 2025, Nunn criticized Democratic lawmakers in a post, stating: "The very Democrats holding the government hostage say, 'I can’t afford to live without my paycheck.' Yeah, neither can the men and women in uniform making a lot less money than Members of Congress. I deferred my pay alongside the entire Iowa delegation. My Democratic colleagues".
In another message posted on October 12, 2025, Nunn called for action from his political opponents: "The solution to ending the Democrat Shutdown is simple: pass @HouseGOP’s clean spending bill and get back to work for the American people. While Democrats continue to put party over country, Team Nunn will stay laser-focused on delivering for Iowans."
Later that day, he commented on the economic impact of the shutdown on his home state: "The Democrat Shutdown is hitting Iowa’s economy hard. Every week this drags on, we lose $137 million in economic activity as $177 million in wages disappear. Senate Democrats are playing politics with people's lives and livelihoods."
Government shutdowns have historically resulted from impasses over federal budget legislation or appropriations bills. When a shutdown occurs, many government services are suspended and federal employees may be furloughed or required to work without pay until funding is restored. In previous instances of government shutdowns in the United States, significant financial impacts have been observed at both local and national levels due to halted operations and delayed payments to workers.
Zach Nunn has previously served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force before being elected to Congress.
