City of des Moines issued the following announcement on Sept. 17
The City of Des Moines released today a master plan that will transform a 100-year-old working industrial neighborhood into a walkable mixed-use community that includes restaurants, retail shops, offices and a wide-range of housing.
The Market District of the East Village Master Plan was unveiled at today’s Urban Design Review Board by the City’s Office of Economic Development. Roughly 12 years in the making, the plan will create in the 260-acre Market District an urban neighborhood that will support and supplement the on-going redevelopment activity in both Downtown Des Moines and the East Village.
“This area brings a unique opportunity for vibrancy along our riverfront and a lively urban neighborhood in downtown,” said Erin Olson-Douglas, City of Des Moines economic development director. “The vision identified in the plan builds upon the ambitious development that has already started in the area, creating a sustainable district with parks, housing and places to work for Des Moines and our region.”
Within the Market District, residential options will be developed to encourage a variety of household types and income levels within the neighborhood – from Millennials, young professionals and families to empty nesters, retirees and seniors.
Residential options could include apartments, condominiums, townhomes and missing middle typologies (duplexes to 12-plexes) with a range of affordability. The Market District would be connected by a robust mobility network that serves equally the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists, vehicles and transit.
If developed according to the master plan, the Market District should yield more than 3,400 housing units with 3,300 multi-family units and more than 100 townhomes. The mixed-use structures could contain approximately 210,000 square feet of office space and an additional 135,000 square feet of retail space.
The 260-acre Market District is located east of downtown Des Moines and south of the East Village. The state capitol overlooks the district, approximately 1/2 mile to the northeast.
Following today’s meeting of the Urban Design Review Board, the Market District Master Plan will be presented to the Plan and Zoning Commission on October 3 and a City Council Work Session on October 14. It is hoped the Council will decide on the plan at their November 4 meeting.
