Iowa wrestlers performed well at this past weekend's Southern Scuffle with many Iowa wrestlers advancing to later rounds.
"Trio of Hawkeye wrestlers took home top four finishes at the Southern Scuffle at McKenzie Arena on Sunday," Hawkeye Sports reported.
In total, six Iowa wrestlers made it to the quarterfinal round, with an additional four advancing to the semifinals, according to Hawkeye Sports. The Hawkeyes who advanced to the semifinals included Drake Ayala, Aaron Costello, Cullan Schriever and Brennan Swafford.
Freshman Drake Ayala was awarded third place. Seniors Aaron Costello and Cullan Schriever finished in a tie for fourth. Ayala was defeated in the semifinals by Minnesota wrestler Patrick McKee by a score of 6-5.
Ayala subsequently won the consolation match between the losers of the two semifinal matches, defeating Caleb Smith of Appalachian State in a 5-2 decision, according to Hawkeye Sports.
Meanwhile, Schriever was also defeated in the semifinals, by a score of 5-0 to Michigan State's Ravyon Foley. But Schriever also rebounded in the consolation matches, winning 9-2 against Missouri’s Trey Crawford in the consolation semifinals before falling 4-2 to Chattanooga’s Brayden Palmer in the final third place match.
In his semifinal bout, Costello was defeated 9-0 by Lewis Fernandes of Cornell, according Hawkeye Sports. Costello also bounced back well with a 7-5 win over Tyrie Houghton of North Carolina State in the consolation semifinals prior to losing 4-1 in the third place match to North Dakota State’s Brandon Metz.
