DMACC Donates Computers to Afghan Refugees

24

Des Moines Area Community College recently issued the following announcement.

DMACC set to help these families connect to their new home and life in Iowa.

Media Advisory

WHO: DMACC President Rob Denson will join Erin Bell and Alison Hoeman, both volunteers with Des Moines Refugee Support and Nabi Mohammadi, a representative from the Afghan community for a special donation event.

WHAT: The mission of Des Moines Refugee Support is to identify and bridge gaps for refugee families, in particular refugee children, as they establish their new lives in Iowa. Responding to a call for assistance, DMACC is donating 50 new laptops that will be ready for distribution to families within this new community.

WHEN: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 17, 2022

WHERE: DMACC Urban Campus; Bldg 7, First floor atrium

1100 7th Street, Des Moines

WHY: Des Moines Refugee Support is currently helping dozens of Afghans who are being resettled into the Greater Des Moines community. These families are arriving in our community with only a few clothes and very few possessions. The laptops will help these families reach relatives in Afghanistan and help them connect to people and potential employers in Central Iowa.

Last year, DMACC donated more than 300 iPads and laptop computers to DMACC students in need including those who lost their jobs or were otherwise negatively impacted by COVID-19.
