Reduced carbon emissions. Increased stormwater absorption. Lower heating and cooling costs. Increased property values. Each tree planted brings a massive number of benefits to the City of Des Moines which was the focus of the City of Des Moines' Forestry Division's Arbor Day tree planting.
Mayor of Des Moines Frank Cownie, City staff, local students and representatives from the Governor's office and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources took the time to plant a White Oak in honor of the 150th Arbor Day on Friday, April 29.
"Trees are vital to the environmental sustainability of our City," City Forester Shane McQuillan said. "They have environmental benefits, economic benefits and quality of life benefits that give Des Moines its character. It's our mission to maintain and grow our urban forest so our children can reap the benefits of what we're planting today."
The Forestry Division is also gearing up for its annual Tiny Trees event where it gives away over 10,000 trees to Des Moines residents for planting on private property.
