The Des Moines City Council has named Laura Baumgartner as the new city clerk. Baumgartner will take on the new role following her 21 years serving the Des Moines City Clerk’s Office.
Baumgartner was previously the chief deputy city clerk for Des Moines and took on additional responsibilities following the retirement of former city clerk, Paula (Kay) Cmelik, in May 2022. Baumgartner’s extensive experience serving Des Moines residents, business owners, and the City Council led to the decision behind the promotion and will prove valuable in the City’s goal of being a high performing city organization.
"Laura has worked her way up through the ranks of the Clerk’s Office and demonstrated her commitment to our City," said Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie. "We know first-hand how talented, detail-oriented, and knowledgeable Laura is. I’m confident her amazing team will continue to provide excellent service under her leadership."
