DES MOINES, IOWA — Des Moines residents can take part in growing the City's urban tree canopy by picking up five free Tiny Trees this Saturday, May 13, at Polk County River Place.
"It's a great way for residents to help grow the urban forest in a private capacity while we work on adding more trees to public spaces," said City Forester Shane McQuillan.
Since 2017, the Department of Public Works' Forestry Division has given away thousands of free Tiny Trees to residents every spring. The Forestry team and several volunteers will be set up in the parking lot at 2309 Euclid Avenue from 8 a.m. until noon as they hand out up to five trees along with planting instructions to Des Moines residents. While Forestry did take Tiny Tree orders from nearly 2,000 residents to help gauge species demand, residents are encouraged to show up whether they remember their order or not."All you have to do is live in Des Moines and we will have trees for you," McQuillan said.Learn more about the Tiny Trees program including which species will be available this Saturday at DSM.City/TinyTrees.
