DES MOINES, IOWA –  After nearly a year of collecting community feedback through stakeholder meetings, person-to-person outreach and an initial online survey, the City of Des Moines is asking residents to once again reflect on what’s important to them before finalizing a new proposed ReflectDSM historic preservation plan.

An online video survey is available in both English and Spanish, recorded by volunteers serving on the advisory committee for ReflectDSM. In order to make sure the plan is reflective of the Des Moines community as possible, stakeholders hope to capture as much feedback from the public as they can.

The City’s current Historic Preservation Plan was written in 1995 and laid the groundwork for a preservation program that recognizes the importance of utilizing historic resources, partnerships and tools in the protection of historic areas of Des Moines.

The updated plan is intended to provide a framework for making our historic preservation processes more diverse, equitable, accessible, and inclusive. Beyond expanding the plan to cover all areas of the city, the proposed plan also considers the importance of intangible historic resources – such as events, stories, and places that have been lost over time or run the risk of getting lost without intentional efforts to preserve them.

The City began convening stakeholders and collecting public input during the summer of 2022 and is currently on track to present ReflectDSM for Des Moines City Council consideration in late summer of 2023.
