DES MOINES, IOWA — Attention all boaters: Please take note that water levels on the Des Moines River will experience a noticeable decrease starting Monday, July 10.

Weather permitting, the City of Des Moines has scheduled the installation of flashboards at the Center Street Dam on Tuesday, July 11, commencing at 7:30 a.m.

To facilitate the installation, the outflow at the Saylorville Reservoir dam will be adjusted from Monday, July 10 onwards, allowing City personnel to safely access the Center Street Dam. Once the installation is finalized, the outflow at the Saylorville Reservoir Dam will be readjusted to restore and raise the water level back to its normal state.

Boaters planning to navigate the Des Moines River and Birdland Marina should prepare for lower water levels and consider the potential impact on their activities. The reduced river levels are expected to persist for approximately 24-36 hours.

The flashboards, which are temporarily installed at the Center Street Dam, serve the purpose of elevating the river level and facilitating recreational opportunities upstream on the Des Moines River. These flashboards are removed during the autumn season to mitigate flood risks along the Des Moines River.

In the event of adverse weather conditions, the installation process will be rescheduled for Wednesday, July 12.
