Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and several colleagues issued a statement to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide. This statement was released alongside Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), and Peter Welch (D-Vt.).
The senators acknowledged the tragedy, which saw over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys lose their lives in what has been called "the largest atrocity in Europe since the Second World War." They highlighted that these individuals were targeted not for their actions but for their identity. The genocide prompted international efforts to stop civilian targeting and conclude the war.
The statement also noted that three decades later, some victims remain undiscovered, with families still seeking closure. Seven newly identified victims are being laid to rest in Srebrenica today.
"We are committed to continue marking this somber anniversary," the statement read. It emphasized that reconciliation in Bosnia and Herzegovina starts with acknowledging historical events.
Additionally, Senator Grassley spoke on the Senate floor about the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Bosnian Genocide.
