Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), along with Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa) and Chellie Pingree (D-Maine), have reintroduced a bill to explore the benefits of biochar, a carbon-rich material derived from biomass. The proposed Biochar Research Network Act aims to establish a National Biochar Research Network for studying the impact of biochar on various soil types, application methods, and climates.

Grassley emphasized the potential of biochar as an innovative tool for farmers seeking to improve soil quality while sequestering carbon. "Farmers rely on the latest advances in science and innovation to increase their crop productivity and advance soil health," he said. "More information is needed to understand the benefits biochar could provide, and my legislation will facilitate much-needed research into this potentially transformative tool."

Heinrich highlighted the importance of investing in soil health research, stating, "By investing in soil health research, we can help farmers, foresters, and producers make their working lands more resilient." He noted that the bipartisan legislation directs the U.S. Department of Agriculture to research biochar's potential to enhance crop production and conservation.

Miller-Meeks underscored Iowa's agricultural significance: "Our agricultural sector in Iowa is vital to our economy and biochar sits at the intersection of smart agriculture, environment, and energy practices." She advocated for using available resources to promote biochar as an innovative tool for carbon sequestration.

Pingree pointed out Maine's experience with biochar: "Biochar holds incredible promise for our farmers, our forests, and our fight against climate change." She called for investments in biochar research as part of a broader strategy for a sustainable agricultural system.

The proposed National Biochar Research Network would focus on understanding productive uses for biochar in crop production and climate mitigation, assessing its potential for soil carbon sequestration, and delivering practical information on sustainable production methods.
