Senator Chuck Grassley, a Republican representing Iowa, posted a series of messages on his X (formerly Twitter) account on October 8 and 9, 2025, addressing the ongoing government shutdown and international developments.
In his first post on October 8, Grassley commented on the economic impact of the government shutdown on his home state: "Fr every wk of the Schumer Shutdown Iowa loses approx $137M in gross state product I’ve voted many times for a continuation of govt funding".
Later that evening, Grassley called on Democratic senators to support efforts to continue government funding and ensure military pay. He wrote: "There ought to be at least 8 dems out of 47 who know we should pay our military whose pay will stop October 15 if government is not open Pls join republicans in continuing to fund govt Stop the Schumer Shutdown".
On October 9, Grassley shifted focus to foreign affairs, referencing developments in the Middle East: "Encouraging news from Pres Trump abt agreement by Israel & Hamas to peace plan".
The senator’s remarks come as Congress faces a deadlock over government funding, with both parties blaming each other for the impasse. The term "Schumer Shutdown" used by Grassley refers to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and is part of partisan rhetoric often used during such standoffs. During federal government shutdowns, non-essential services are halted and federal employees—including members of the military—may see their pay delayed if new appropriations are not passed by Congress. In past shutdowns, Iowa has experienced significant economic impacts due to its reliance on federal programs and contracts.
Grassley's reference to an agreement between Israel and Hamas follows recent diplomatic efforts in the region. Presidential involvement in Middle East peace negotiations has been a recurring feature in U.S. foreign policy.
