The Des Moines City Council recently considered helping with several city projects to improve the safety of the city.
At the meeting, the city council considered a $25,000 grant to help fund security cameras in the downtown skywalks. This project came about after a group of juveniles assaulted a couple in a skywalk in October 2019, WHO-HD news reported.
The grant was approved by the council and initial security cameras will be set up. Five sensing pods will be the first installed in the skywalks. Each pod will come with four cameras, a two-way speaker, two TV monitors and two heat sensors, WHO-HD reported.
Another $25,000 grant is expected from Polk County, $125,00 from Operation Downtown and the rest will be paid for by the Skywalk Association.
The council also considered another grant of $44,000 to contribute to more protective netting at Principal Park. The Iowa Cubs will pay for the rest of the protective netting.
