City-owned utility companies can begin shutting off utilities on May 28 in Iowa as the state begins to reopen.

While Iowa may be reopening, the state's unemployment rate for April increased to 10.2%, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Guidelines from the Iowa Utilities Board have been issued for utility companies to follow as the state begins to reopen, the Perry News reported.

The guidelines state that city-owned utilities can begin shutting off on May 28, but investor-owned utilities aren't allowed to begin disconnections until July 1. Included with the guidelines is a timeline, which shows when utilities can begin notifying accounts of delinquency, shutting off utilities and other notices.

Any Iowa customers that have tested positive for COVID-19 will be excluded from the guidelines and will be able to apply for an extension, according to the Perry News. Other customers with health conditions will also receive exemption.
