In the latest installment of the City of Des Moines’ 20-year Neighborhood Sidewalk Program, the city plans to pave just under 7.6 miles of sidewalk across the city.
A news release on the city’s website stated that the city council approved the 40,000 feet of new sidewalk in April. Work is expected to begin before the end of summer and completed by fall of 2021.
The Neighborhood Sidewalk Program is expected to result in 180 total miles of new sidewalks for areas of the city that currently lack. The program prioritizes safety for school students by addressing routes leading to schools and bus stops, as well as connecting existing sidewalk sections around the city.
According to the release, prior years had seen significantly fewer miles of new sidewalk, with only a half mile paved in some years.
A map of the planned sidewalk extensions has been posted to the city’s website.
