The Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission was awarded the 2020 Governor’s Emmy Award, according to the city’s website.
The Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recognized the commission thanks to its documentary Breaking Bread, Building Bridges. The award-winning feature, directed by Joshua V. Barr, tells the story of those who are grouped together due to their differences.
The documentary first kicked off three years ago as 34 people were selected to take part in the experiment (150 people total signed up initially).
The honor is the sole award voted on by the Board of Governors, a group of media personalities and professionals in the area.
The award ceremony will be broadcast on the commission’s YouTube channel Saturday, Nov. 14. It will take place at the 21st Annual Upper Midwest Emmy Awards Ceremony.
The award-winning documentary is available on YouTube and Facebook.
