Iowa has revealed its second round of redistricting maps, revising the state’s four congressional districts and legislative boundaries.
One Iowa Action, a group working to advance LGBTQ rights in the state through grassroots approaches, policies, voter education and advocacy, tweeted Oct. 21, sharing support for the proposal.
“Today the LSA (Legislative Services Agency) has released their second proposed redistricting maps. We hope that next week #ialegis will vote to accept this fair, non-partisan proposal. If the legislature rejects this proposal in favor of a third map, it could open the flood gates to partisan gerrymandering,” the organization wrote in its tweet.
The second maps became available Oct. 21, and lawmakers were given a week to review the proposal before coming together for a special session, according to Iowa Capital Dispatch.
This marks the second proposal out of the state’s nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency following a vote in early October. At that time, Republican lawmakers argued for more compact districts and evenly balanced populations, the Iowa Capital Dispatch reported.
An outline of the proposed map stated Story County would move back into the 4th District, with Marshall County added in, KCII reported. Linn County would move to the 2nd District and Wapello County to the 3rd District. The legislature is expected to meet again on Oct. 28 to consider the proposal.
