City of Des Moines recently issued the following announcement.
The Street Maintenance Division of Public Works put in the work during this weekend's warm weather to prepare for potential icy overnight conditions.
Crews applied salt brine to Des Moines' 750 mile snow route system as well as approximately 300 miles of trouble spots known as red lines on Friday and Saturday which will combat rain and freezing rain that are expected overnight tonight.
"Our team has gotten out in front of this storm," Public Works Director Jonathan Gano said. "This will provide a perfect set of circumstances for the brine and rock salt we're planning on using to work and prevent major problems getting around Des Moines."
Salt brine is essentially a mix of table salt and water that acts as an anti-icing agent when applied to roadways.
Trucks have also been converted to carry salt spreaders to spread rock salt during and after the storm. Forecasts do not currently include a significant accumulation of snow during this round of winter weather, but Public Works officials are already tracking another snowstorm due later this week.
