To Des Moines residents, MEGA SCRUB represents a massive opportunity to get rid of huge items for free. Tomorrow (April 16th) will mark the first MEGA SCRUB event of 2022 where residents can fill up roll-off dumpsters with bulk items, shred papers and dispose of household hazardous chemicals for free at Hoover High School (4800 Aurora Ave.) from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"MEGA SCRUBs are our most anticipated events of the SCRUB season,” Public Works Director Jonathan Gano said. “We only have four MEGA SCRUBs a year and it’s a great opportunity to get rid of items that can’t be disposed of at our monthly SCRUB events. We usually expect several hundred cars at MEGA SCRUB events, so there may be lines, but they generally move quickly at these events.
Des Moines residents are allowed to bring items to dispose of for free at the MEGA SCRUB event, which includes an expanded list of accepted items including bulk items, appliances, household hazardous waste and tires.
Proof of residency is required and will be accepted in the form of photo ID or a current utility bill with a Des Moines address.
This Saturday, the Public Works Department will also host a monthly SCRUB event at the MWA Transfer Station (4198 Delaware Ave.) and the MWA Compost Center (1601 Harriett St.) from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Additional items that are ONLY accepted at MEGA SCRUB Events are:
- Aerosols
- Acids/Bases
- Antifreeze
- Batteries: Rechargeable mercuric-oxide (button batteries), nickel cadmium (NiCd), lithium (Li), nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) or car batteries)
- Cell phones
- Cleaners, drain and liquid cleaners
- Fertilizers
- Floor care products
- Gasoline and kerosene
- Glues
- Light bulbs: high efficiency only: SFLs, ballast, high intensity discharge
- Motor oil
- Oil filters
- Oven cleaner
- Paints: Oil based only. NO LATEX!
- Petroleum-based adhesives
- Pesticides
- Poison
- Pool chemicals
- Roofing tar
- Rust removers
- Sharps: must be contained in detergent bottles or sharps containers (not milk jugs or pop bottles). Lids must also be taped.
- Shellac and stains
- Thermostats/thermometers
