The City of Des Moines will observe Independence Day on Monday, July 4th, 2022. Due to the holiday, garbage, recycling and yard waste collection will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week.
That means that residents who normally see their collection on Mondays will have their garbage collected on Tuesday, July 6th, until pickup is completed on Saturday, July 9th for residents who normally have Friday collections. More details about the Holiday pickup schedule is available at DSM.city/HolidaySchedule.
Additionally, Des Moines City Administration Buildings will be closed on Monday, July 4th to observe the holiday. This includes all Des Moines Public Library branches which will be closed Monday, July 4th before reopening on Tuesday, July 5th.
The Des Moines Fire and Police Departments would also like to remind neighbors that use of consumer fireworks within City of Des Moines limits is dangerous, against the law, and inconsiderate of those that live around you. Save money and peace of mind by leaving fireworks shows to the professionals.
The Des Moines Fire Department has responded to significant house fires caused by fireworks in past years. With the risk of unsafe fireworks, our firefighters typically see an increase in house and grass fires during holiday celebrations, something they're hoping to avoid this year.
Due to how quickly fireworks are set off, it is difficult for Des Moines Police officers to catch violators in the act. A witness able to personally identify someone breaking the law is needed in order to issue a citation. If you witness someone breaking the law and are willing to personally identify them to law enforcement, please call the DMPD non-emergency dispatch line at (515) 283-4811.
