One day and 96 volunteer hours later, Evergreen Park has a brand new playground.
Volunteers installed the playground today at Park Ave. and SE 22nd Street which will open for business in the next week, once concrete has had time to cure and set.
"We don’t have a lot of pocket parks with playgrounds in Ward IV,” Ward IV Councilman Joe Gatto said. “We’ve made a commitment to have a park within 10 minutes walk of everyone’s house with amenities like this one. This is vital for the people that live near Evergreen Park."
Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department employees used their volunteer time off (VTO) to assist the Parks division with installation of new playground equipment at Evergreen Park.
“The employees using their volunteer time to build this was critical,” Park Planner Lee Wheelock said. “To pay for installation on this park would have meant we could only afford about 2/3 of the playground equipment you see here.”
Crews worked in teams to assemble playground equipment like play structures, slides and swings that will serve neighborhood kids for decades to come.
The Evergreen Park makeover isn’t finished with the playground installation, as construction crews are preparing to erect a shelter and complete a futsal mini-pitch at the park in the next few months.
“It’s great for the neighborhood to improve the quality of life for the neighborhood,” At-large councilwoman Connie Boesen said. “It’s exciting because it’s showing our City’s investment in the families of Des Moines and is a continuation of committing to our citizens that we’re providing the best city we can.”
