City of Des Moines residents are invited to a series of budget listening post events in early December before a preliminary budget is developed for fiscal year 2024. The listening post events will be hosted in each of Des Moines’ four wards and provide multiple opportunities for residents to learn about the City’s budget process.
City Manager Scott Sanders, Finance Director Nick Schaul, and City elected officials will be available at each event to answer questions related to the City’s budget and to listen to feedback.
The budget listening posts schedule includes:
Date/Time Location
Tuesday, Dec. 6, 6-7 p.m. Pioneer Columbus Community Recreation Center (2100 SE 5th St.)
Thursday, Dec. 8, 6-7 p.m. Central Library (1000 Grand Ave.)

If a resident is unable to attend a listening post in person, a budget presentation and opportunity to submit budget feedback online will be published at DSM.city/budget starting Dec. 1.
These informal events represent the first phase of budget planning for the City of Des Moines. After hearing from residents, City staff will release a preliminary budget in late January for Des Moines City Council to consider. Multiple formal public hearings will be held at Council meetings in February and March before a Council-certified budget is sent to the Polk County Auditor’s Office at the end of March. Fiscal year 2024 begins on July 1, 2023 and ends on June 30, 2024.
