Public Works Department Urges Snow Removal Alert Sign Ups Before Blizzard Hits Des Moines

Des Moines Public Works Director Jonathan Gano is urging people to be prepared for the upcoming blizzard by signing up for parking restriction text alerts.

"This storm is going to have a large impact on travel in the metro, and we will need everyone’s cooperation to keep our roads clear so our drivers can move snow off the roads,” Gano said."

This year, Des Moines Public Works is asking residents to text a new number to be added to the distribution list.

To sign up for general snow removal updates, text the word “SNOW” to 515-355-8815.

To sign up for Odd / Even Neighborhood parking alerts, text the word “ODDSNOW” to 515-355-8815. Odd / Even Neighborhood alerts apply to parking in the Drake, Carpenter, Sherman Hill and parts of River Bend Neighborhood.

Residents who signed up for text message alerts in the past will continue to receive alerts from the new distribution number without the need to sign up again.

With any snow storm this season, Des Moines visitors and residents can stay prepared for winter weather at DMSnow.org or by following @dmdpw on Twitter and Des Moines Public Works on Facebook.

Residents will have 48 hours after the snow stops to clear their sidewalks before they could become subject to administrative penalties of at least $75 that increase with repeated violations.

Low-income seniors and disabled persons unable to remove their snow due to physical and/or financial constraints are encouraged to contact United Way 2-1-1 to locate snow removal assistance available to private property owners in Des Moines.

If there are any questions about City snow removal, residents are encouraged to call the 24/7 Public Works Customer Service Center at 515-283-4950.
