City of Des Moines public buildings will close in observance of the New Year's holiday on Monday, January 2 and will reopen on Tuesday, January 3.

Garbage, recycling and yard waste collection services are not impacted by the New Year's holiday this year, so residents will have their carts collected curbside on their normal collection days. Below is more information for disposing of common holiday items. Click here for more information on the City's Holiday Pickup Schedule.

Holiday clean up tips:

  • Christmas trees will be collected on residents' normal collection days with a green Compost It! sticker attached and decorations removed. The stickers cost $1.25 and can be purchased from these metro locations.
  • For those hanging on to their Christmas tree, the City of Des Moines will continue to pick up trees with Compost It! stickers on normal collection days for the next month.
  • Wrapping paper may be recycled in your blue recycling cart, as long as it does not contain glitter or foil.
  • Cardboard boxes may be flattened and disposed of at the 24/7 Cardboard Drop Off Center (110 SE 6th Street).
  • More questions? Call our 24/7 Customer Service Center at 515-283-4950 with any holiday waste questions.
