DES MOINES, IOWA — Wednesday, February 1, 2023 — While snow still covers much of Des Moines, spring is approaching and it's a great time for residents to begin plans to add natural beauty to their homes. Tiny Trees 2023 orders opened this morning and Des Moines residents can now place their orders for up to five free trees to plant on their property.
Tiny Trees has given away thousands of trees annually since it began in 2017, and last year's event set a new record with nearly 12,000 trees given away to over 2,000 residents.
"As a property owner, you get to enjoy all the natural and aesthetic benefits of a tree while helping to improve the City as a whole," Public Works Director Jonathan Gano said. "These trees are making a very real impact on our urban forest already and it's only going to improve as this program continues."
This year, residents will be able to choose from eight tree species including six new options that were not offered last year. The Tiny Trees 2023 species are Black Oak, Northern Pecan, River Birch, Shagbark Hickory, Chokecherry, Gray Dogwood, White Spruce and Bald Cypress.
Residents have until April 28 to order, with pickup taking place May 13 at Polk County River Place (2309 Euclid Avenue) from 8 a.m. to noon. Place your order today at DSM.city/TinyTrees.
