DES MOINES, IOWA — Friday, February 3, 2023 — This afternoon, 25 Des Moines Fire Department recruits will shake Chief John TeKippe’s hand and become DMFD Firefighters.
When sworn in at 2 p.m. today, they’ll become the third DMFD Academy class to graduate in the last 12 months, meaning a record 55 men and women have become sworn firefighters serving the City of Des Moines in the last year.
The Des Moines Fire Department responded to a record number of calls in 2022, responding to 32,496 calls during the year, or one call approximately every 16 minutes.
Speaking on behalf of the 98th Class at the ceremony will be Alexis Storbeck, who is believed to be part of the first father and daughter combination to work for DMFD alongside her father, Senior Medic Paul Storbeck.
“Today is an exciting day for the future of Des Moines,” TeKippe said. “We have 25 men and women who will be serving Des Moines for decades to come. You’re looking at the future of first responders in Des Moines.”
