An Iowa City man was sentenced yesterday to 60 months in federal prison for making false statements during firearm purchases and unlawfully possessing firearms while a drug user.

According to public court documents and evidence presented at sentencing, Kiante Demarr Hough Green, 23, purchased numerous firearms which he provided to individuals he knew were prohibited from possessing firearms. These firearms were subsequently used in violent crimes. At the time of Green’s firearm purchases and during his possession of the firearms, he was an unlawful user of controlled substances and engaged in the distribution of marijuana.

After completing his term of imprisonment, Green will be required to serve three years of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.

United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa made the announcement. The case was investigated by the Iowa City Police Department.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that brings together all levels of law enforcement and communities to reduce violent crime and gun violence, aiming to make neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the department launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
