Internal FBI emails have surfaced, revealing efforts by agents and prosecutors within the Biden Department of Justice (DOJ) to pursue additional criminal charges against former President Donald Trump. These revelations were brought to light through documents obtained by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and reported exclusively by the New York Post.
The emails from 2023 show that DOJ prosecutor JP Cooney communicated with colleagues about Trump's involvement with a choir composed of January 6 prisoners. The discussion was prompted by a Forbes article titled "Trump Collaborates On Song With Jan. 6 Defendants." Cooney, who previously worked on investigations related to Trump under special counsel Jack Smith, expressed interest in further exploring Trump's role.
Cooney's email chain involved eight agents and DOJ staff, including Walter Giardina, known for his involvement in several high-profile cases against Trump and his allies. Giardina responded by stating he was investigating claims made in the Forbes article.
Grassley has criticized these actions as an example of using federal law enforcement resources to target Trump. He commented, "Instead of focusing on DOJ and FBI’s core law enforcement responsibilities, partisan prosecutors and agents were surfing the web to find any shred of information they could use to spin another baseless case against Trump."
The internal communications raise questions about the motivations behind certain DOJ actions during Biden's presidency.
