Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa has reached out to the United States Postal Service (USPS) with concerns about its service quality and financial self-sufficiency. This action follows numerous complaints from Iowans about mail delivery issues. The incoming Postmaster General, David Steiner, is expected to join USPS in July.

Grassley expressed that postal customers face challenges with timely and reliable mail services. Businesses have also reported that rising postage rates are impacting operations, leading to reduced mailing volumes. "I often hear from postal customers that they are facing issues with sending and receiving their mail in a timely and reliable manner," Grassley stated.

Issues raised by Iowans include delayed deliveries of bills and checks, missing mail, and increased delays in mail pickup. Businesses are struggling with significant rate hikes exceeding 50% and poor package handling.

Grassley acknowledged the dedication of postal workers but stressed the need for USPS to maintain service quality while implementing financial reforms. "Delivering to every corner of the United States is no small feat," he remarked.

The senator urged USPS to focus on long-term viability, suggesting an innovative approach to adapt the institution as needed. Unlike typical federal agencies, USPS operates without congressional funding, relying instead on revenue from postage and shipping services. It has faced declining first-class mail volume and ongoing revenue losses for years.

Previous administrations have suggested reforms to modernize USPS operations while maintaining its universal service mission. As Steiner prepares to take his role as Postmaster General, Grassley encouraged him and the Board of Governors to be flexible in implementing reforms.

Grassley's letter emphasized the importance of balancing financial stability with quality service: "The long-term viability of USPS ought to be the focus."
