As the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, a significant focus has been placed on enhancing border security measures in response to what is described as the "disastrous open border policies" of the Biden-Harris administration. The committee's efforts are part of a broader budget bill aimed at addressing these concerns.

The Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General recently confirmed that there were lapses in vetting Afghan evacuees, with 55 individuals identified through the terrorist screening database. An Afghan national was arrested last fall for plotting a terror attack after entering the U.S. on a Special Immigrant Visa. This situation is compounded by recent tensions between Iran and the United States following Operation Midnight Hammer, which targeted Iranian nuclear sites.

In response to these challenges, historic investments have been proposed in immigration systems under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. These include increased funding for immigration agencies, reimbursement for states aiding border protection during the current administration, and expanded resources for law enforcement officers.

Concerns about open border policies impacting law enforcement safety were also addressed. The Senate Judiciary Committee convened a hearing highlighting how Mexican drug cartels have exploited these policies to enhance smuggling operations. Testimonies from officials across various federal agencies emphasized their ongoing struggles against cartel activities.

Additional resources are being allocated to combat drug trafficking and support local law enforcement efforts through programs like Byrne JAG and Community Policing Services (COPS). Furthermore, enhancements in recruitment and training tools for agencies such as the U.S. Secret Service are included following recent assassination attempts against President Trump.

These legislative actions align with what is described as an "America First agenda," focusing on reclaiming sovereignty and ensuring rule of law at borders to protect American citizens.
